Convening

The Rockefeller Foundation’s Africa Regional Office will host The Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Week from the 5th – 9th December in Nairobi. The event will showcase and demonstrate the importance of resilience in enabling people, entities, and communities to survive, adapt, and thrive in the midst of shocks and stresses that face Africa today.

The week will begin with a three-day event starting with an optional one-day field visit to sites in Nairobi where resilience-building can be experienced first-hand, followed by a two-day convening where participants will have the opportunity to:

Learn

Deepen knowledge and understanding of resilience.

Experience

Learn from first-hand examples of resilience practice, with demonstrable impact.

Engage

         Interact and share knowledge.       .

Network

Meet resilience leaders and kick-start potential partnerships.

The cross – cutting relevance of resilience will be explored during the field visit with a focus on four thematic areas:

Participants will also discuss and explore the shocks and stresses facing Africa,and engage with leading innovators and change-makers to address these problems. The Rockefeller Foundation was an early leader in identifying the global need for resilience. Over the last decade, the Foundation has invested more than a half-billion USD to help both cities and communities build their economic, social and climate resilience. These investments include work across Africa to help cities, communities, and people better adopt to shocks and stresses, including a snapshot of Rockefeller Foundation investments that will contribute to the discussions.

An Evening with Bellagio

An opportunity to enjoy dinner and engage with esteemed alumni of the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center residency program from across Africa. All participants at dinner will be joined by alumni at their tables to engage with these leading thinkers, artists and practitioners. The evening will give everyone a flavor of the diversity of thought and perspective that is advanced at the Foundation’s Bellagio Center. This event is curated in collaboration with Africa Centre.

Resilience Academy

The Foundation invites grantees and partners to participate in a two-day Resilience Academy December 8th and 9th that will enable interdisciplinary teams to connect with technical expertise to design solutions that address the current and future risks affecting people, organizations and communities.

Ashvin Dayal joined the Rockefeller Foundation in 2008. As Associate Vice President, Managing Director, Asia, he manages the Foundation’s regional office based in Bangkok, Thailand, and oversees work across Asia, strengthening and complementing the Foundation’s initiatives around the globe.

Polly Ericksen
Programme Leader, Livestock Systems and Environment
Ericksen leads the research program on Livestock Systems and Environment (LSE) at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). She has a PhD in Soil Science and an MSc in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BS in History from Swarthmore College.
